Massawa is more than the best Eritrean/Ethiopian food you’ll ever have. It’s like eating in the home of new friends, delighted to host you and share their food and friendship, and ready to treat you like family. It’s where our son loves to study, with a pot of their amazing coffee and under the caring eye of people who look out for him. It’s where we gather for dinner. The Shiro tastes like comfort, the Keyih Ades will warm your belly on the coldest Glasgow day, and the Doro Wat is as good as it gets. Perfectly soft, slightly tart injera to scoop it all up. And an amazing jebena of fresh roasted Eritrean coffee to finish things off. An oasis off Byres road, a home-away-from-home no matter where you’re from, and a meal you’ll remember. A regular day dinner. A graduation celebration. It’s great for any occasion. Go there. You won’t regret it.
Delicious food, lovely service, reasonable prices, five stars all round. We got the mixed sharing platter for three which allows you to pick three meat dishes and two vegetarian dishes, all of which were really good. It also comes with injera which is a sourdough flatbread, naturally gluten free and with a quite unique lightness to it. Will definitely be back
Absolutely loved ordering from Massawa again. I previously visited for a sit-in meal with friends and family, but this was my first time ordering takeaway and it did not disappoint. The food felt warm, comforting and authentic, especially for someone from East Africa. The flavours were rich and grounding without feeling overly heavy, and you can tell care goes into the cooking. The gomen/hamli was especially comforting and the shekla tibsi was packed with flavour. Even the sambusa brought back memories 😄 I also really appreciate supporting smaller East African businesses in Scotland. It’s important to have spaces that bring a taste of home and culture to the community. Thank you again — will definitely order again.
I’ve been to Massawa on three occasions and each time the food has not disappointed. It’s a beautiful atmosphere with well maintained facilities. Staff are very friendly and help guide you on what to order. The menu caters to vegan and gluten intolerant guests as well. Really enjoy the doro wat every time I go, the meat platter is my new favourites. Very reasonably priced especially when going with a group. You cannot miss the opportunity of trying the traditional coffee served with salted popcorn afterwards!
My wife and I were greeted warmly and made to feel truly welcome. Neither of us had had Eritrean food before, so it we found all the new flavours and textures exciting. Plenty of choices for vegans, but also a good selection for carnivores. My wife enjoyed the vegan cake for dessert, while I absolutely loved the cardamom ice cream.
