Description
Depart Glasgow heading west towards Loch Lomond. The first stop is Dumbarton Castle, Scotland's oldest recorded fortress, with history dating to the 5th century when Saint Patrick referenced King Ceretic in one of the earliest known letters. The castle hosted Viking kings, William Wallace, Mary Queen of Scots, and Queen Elizabeth II.
Next, take a short drive to view the banks of Loch Lomond, the largest lake surface area on the British mainland, stretching over 23 miles. Shortly after, visit Luss, a popular village with sandstone and slate cottages lining the streets. Walk to the pier for views across the loch to surrounding mountains, then a short walk leads to the church graveyard, featuring graves dating back to 600-700 AD and a Viking hogback gravestone.
Heading north from Luss, the tour follows Loch Long, a sea loch similar to a Scandinavian fjord. The route climbs to The Rest and Be Thankful pass, which separates Glen Kinglas from Glen Croe. Stop at a viewpoint to observe the rugged Highland landscape with heather, mountainside, and forest.
Continuing to Loch Fyne, another sea loch renowned for seafood, visit the Loch Fyne Oyster Bar which includes a restaurant (open five days a week, closed Tuesday and Wednesday) and a delicatessen (open daily). Inveraray, situated on Loch Fyne’s western shore, offers a grand scenic setting. Explore the village and walk to Inveraray Castle. The castle grounds are open year-round, but interior access and gardens are open from April to October, five days a week, closed Tuesday and Wednesday.
Additional optional visits include Kilchurn Castle, built around 1450 and set amidst mountains at Loch Awe’s head, providing dramatic photo opportunities. Nearby is St Conan's Kirk, a unique church on Loch Awe's edge, known for its distinctive architecture and atmosphere. After completing your chosen itinerary, return to Glasgow.
