The first stop is Dumbarton Castle, the oldest recorded Scottish fortress with history dating back to the 5th century. It has hosted Viking kings, William Wallace, Mary Queen of Scots, and Queen Elizabeth II.
Next, you’ll view Loch Lomond, the largest surface area lake on the British mainland, extending over 23 miles. Just 10 minutes from the viewing point, you'll visit the village of Luss. Walk past sandstone cottages to the pier for views across the loch and to the nearby church graveyard with Viking-era gravestones.
The route from Loch Lomond to Stirling features scenic villages and farmland backed by the Highlands. Approaching Stirling, you can see Stirling Castle and The Wallace Monument from a distance.
Stirling Castle
Perched on a volcanic outcrop overlooking the River Forth, Stirling Castle is one of Scotland’s largest and most significant castles, both historically and architecturally. Allocate about 60 minutes to explore. Entrance fee applies.
The William Wallace Monument
An 8-minute drive from the castle, this 220-foot monument sits atop Abbey Craig hill, the site where Wallace won the Battle of Stirling Bridge in 1297. Visitors climb 276 steps for views. Allow 40 minutes. Entrance fee applies.
Old Stirling Bridge
A short drive from the monument, the current 15th-century bridge replaced earlier timber versions. It is the site of Wallace’s 1297 victory over Edward I’s forces.
The tour concludes with a return to Greenock Ocean Terminal.
