From the atmosphere to the attention to detail; Gamba is a real hidden gem in the city. We ordered the Wild Halibut which blew us away! Real innovation with flavours and pairing of ingredients. Fantastic quality of service throughout too.
Gamba is a wonderful experience. The vibes are peaceful and calm, the staff are kind and caring, and the food is beautiful, if small in their portions. We were sat at a table, not one of the booths, and I will admit that while we waited for our food, the seats proved to become uncomfortable. The wait for meals takes around forty five minutes to an hour, but the space between courses once the starter has been served is minuscule, just long enough to digest the food and be ready for the next meal. I had the soup, which was decent. The taste reminds me of a home made tomato soup made with fish stock. The pieces of fish within the soup were few and far between but overall I did enjoy it. For the main course I had surf and turf with a side of creamed spinach, which was delicious and left me wanting more, both due to the well flavoured scallop and steak as well as the unfortunately smaller portion size. This is to be expected with fine dining but I must admit for £52 I expected a slight bit more. The prawns served with the surf and turf were flavourless bar the sauce served with the meal and the char, though the texture was perfect. The creamed spinach, served with parmesan and pine nuts, was probably the best part of the meal. Exquisite stuff and rivals some of the best sides I've had at other fine dining establishments. I could have eaten a whole second bowl. My mother had the prawn linguine, and she did not share my enjoyment. The pasta itself was stuck together, a little too al dented, and the seafood mixed through was few and far between. She deemed it far blander than my meal and having given a taste I would have to agree. Overall, I think it's worth the visit at least once if you have a special occasion and enjoy fine dining with a friendlier atmosphere, though I will not be likely to return.
